The comimission to develop a linking stacking auditorium chair came from Rolf Fehlbaum, director of the Vitra Furniture factory in Germany. This design is ergonomically efficient as well as simple in construction. The blue die-cast aluminium frame consists of four legs and two cylinders containing a spring which causes the back to respond gently to the natural pressure of the body. Back and seat are moulded from a single piece of laminated beechwood. Vitra's salesdepartment insisted on an upholstered version but the results were so unsatisfactory that the project was dropped.
